Safe Drill Pad Is a Productive Drill Pad
Drill-pad preparation plays an essential role in protecting people, equipment and drilling performance.Before a rig is mobilised, the working area should be assessed and prepared to provide a stable, level and properly drained surface. The pad must also provide sufficient space for drilling equipment, support vehicles, rod handling, lifting activities and emergency access.
Key drill-pad safety considerations include:
Stable, compacted ground capable of supporting the rig and equipment
Effective drainage to prevent pooling, erosion and unstable conditions
Clearly marked access routes and controlled exclusion zones
Safe positioning of rods, tools, pumps and support vehicles
Suitable lighting for night shifts and low-visibility conditions
Properly routed hoses and cables to reduce slip and trip hazards
Emergency access and clear evacuation routes

Exclusion zones are essential for controlling access around active drilling equipment and protecting people from moving machinery, rotating components, suspended loads and vehicle movements.
Clearly defined safety zones help ensure that only trained and authorised personnel enter high-risk areas. These zones should be established before drilling begins and adjusted whenever equipment, activities or site conditions change.

Restricted access around rotating rods and drill components

Personal Protective Equipment is one of the most visible parts of drilling safety—but it is only effective when the correct equipment is selected, properly fitted, regularly inspected and consistently worn.
On an active drilling site, PPE helps protect teams from moving equipment, falling objects, excessive noise, flying particles, chemical exposure, poor visibility and challenging ground conditions.
Essential drilling-site PPE may include:
Safety helmet for head protection
Safety glasses or goggles for flying particles and fluid splashes
Hearing protection around operating drilling equipment
